ABOUT ME

Welcome to my page, my name is Allie Hicks and I am a News Media and Communication Studies double major at The University of Alabama. My dream job is to one day be a sports broadcaster for College Game Day or to just be in the studio broadcasting somewhere in the southeast, but I am fully open to other locations. I love being on camera as well as sitting down with subjects to interview when understanding their stories. While I am just beginning and have not had many opportunities yet with jobs and internships I am wanting to explore those options this upcoming summer.

I have a background in being on camera for multiple years, doing the morning news in both middle and high school. Transitioning to college, I started in many JCM courses that have allowed me to learn how to create photos, create graphics, work a camera, how to edit using Adobe as well as be on camera myself as well as interview individuals throughout the community.

Growing up in Atlanta, Georgia I began an early admiration for sports as well as being on camera. Throughout my lifetime I have been able to see the sports broadcast world transition from all male to now many, many females in the business. Erin Andrews has been someone who I have followed for years and she is someone I aspire to be like. I plan to take all of my knowledge about shooting, editing, writing, planning, and speaking on camera transition me from a future internship to a job at a station one day.

In a more personal light, I love spending time with my family and friends as well as staying active. I love to stay in shape as well as attend many sporting events around the U.S. Traveling is something I am also extremely passionate about, I have been to over 15 countries in the span of my life and plan to continue to travel for years to come.

MY WORK

I am extremely passionate about photography, in JCM 180 I was able to shoot subjects and learn how to shoot, edit, and use adobe photoshop.

The photo I chose is one of the pictures I took.

This was a great starting point to prepare me to work with cameras as well as editing and move on to future JCM courses.

Below is an example of work I did this semester in JCM 331. This is a news package containing elements of two VO's, two SOT's and one Standup Bridge.

Package Script

When creating a package I wrote my own script to go with my story. This helped me learn broadcast writing skills as well as making mistakes to correct when writing.

A passion for working

One interesting fact about my self is my drive for working and saving money. I have had a job since my junior year of high school. Starting my sophomore year of college I was able to get a job in Tuscaloosa at a store called Lou and Company. While going to school full time I am able to balance having a job throughout the week. It can be tough and challenging at times, but it has taught me how to balance, the importance of deadlines, and how to take responsibility into my own hands due to opening and closing the store myself. By working, I am able to save up half of the money I make and put it into a savings account to use in the near future.
